A Day In The Life Of A Writer
If you think there is something glamorous about the life of a writer, think again. Most writers aren’t composing brilliant works of fiction or penetrating, in depth analyses of the news. They’re racing against the clock, trying to meet deadlines, writing articles about how to get rid of acne or some other subject that is of no interest to them.
Freelance writers have an edge over others when it comes to choosing their subjects. Sometimes, at least, they are able to choose their subjects. However, they also spend more time trying to find work than they actually spend working.
Every now and then, though, a freelance writer gets the opportunity to write a series of articles or even a book about something that is of interest to them and actually get paid for it. A female writer may get commissioned to write the content for a jewelry website. For several weeks or even months, she’ll be able to immerse herself in jewelry as she writes eloquently about rhodium earrings and other things she loves.
There was a time when online writing was a great way to make money. The economic slowdown has changed that, though. Now it seems like everyone is looking for work writing online. Even university lecturers and professional journalists are moonlighting. An extra twenty dollars for a few hours evening work beats nothing and is certainly a step up from watching TV to divert your mind from your troubles.
That said, there aren’t many writers, especially work from home writers, who would willingly give it up in exchange for a well paying day job. You get used to the freedom of working from home, even if at the end of the day, you’ve worked longer hours for less pay.
Writers love to write. Even when they can’t pour their hearts and souls into creative works, they love the challenge of words. When you’re a man who has been commissioned to write a series of articles about hobo handbags, the words don’t come naturally. But when you knuckle down and get to work, you have to find an angle that makes you enthusiastic about them and translate that enthusiasm into words that will sell the product.
After the article is done, the writer feels a certain glow inside. They are proud of a job well done and also relieved, because they know they’ll have food on the table after they’ve been paid.
A day in the life of a writer is rarely as romantic as the writer’s image is. Then again, it could be a lot worse. How many other jobs give you the opportunity to do what you want to do, when you want to do it?
