Utilizing Your Formal Dining Room

Many people have large homes where they are lucky enough to have a formal dining room. However, many of these dining rooms go largely unused. Except for holidays and special parties, many people let their formal dining room sit empty. Just like every other room in the house, this room should be used more often than formal dinners and holidays.

If you have a smaller family, a good idea may be to replace your existing set with smaller, round dining room sets. These round tables may come with extra removable table leaves which make your table longer for those larger parties and holidays. However, a smaller table will be more welcoming for small family dinners.

Changing the rooms decor can really make it more welcoming. People who don’t feel nervous to be in the room will more than likely enjoy using it and will want to use it more often. Try holding an informal party in here, like a child’s baking party. Set up a kitchen hand mixer, cookie sheets, rolling pins and lots of frosting and decorations. Help the kids create their own party favors, delicious baked treats to enjoy later at home.

Changing over your formal dining room to a less formal place to meet will help bring families closer together. Studies have shown that families that eat together at least once a week have a better relationship. Try using the good silver and china. Show your children how fun it can be to have a fancy sit down dinner in their own home.

Eating dinner together brings a family closer, and many families today don’t bother because of busy schedules. But eating together just once or twice a week is better than nothing. It is a great place to start.

Many people already have fancy and expensive dining room table sets. This makes them weary to use them, especially when there are children involved. A good alternative to a new set is to purchase slip covers for your chairs and a tablecloth for your table. All are removable and washable when they become soiled. This is a great idea for families with small children or even clumsy spouses.

If you are the kind of person who just cant bring yourself to eat in your formal dining room daily, even with making some changes, you can start by having a special night once a week or even once a month where you and the family eat there together. Or perhaps a special date night with your spouse. Get dressed up nice, have a romantic dinner and enjoy a room that is otherwise used very little.
