Easy Tips For Training Your New Puppy

Learning proper puppy obedience training can lead to a long lasting relationship with your “best friend”. Dogs are a great pleasure to be around. Dogs can provide a lot of value in your life. Dogs can give you companionship, exercise, and a great deal of fun. They can also provide some challenges.

One of the biggest challenges for any dog owner is training a new puppy. This may take considerable time and commitment. You must be very patient. All of this commitment can be extremely rewarding in the end, however. Training your puppy will bring you a great friend and companion. There are several commands that someone who starts puppy obedience training for the first time must know.

It is obvious that the first command you want to teach is the dog’s name. With a lot of practice and consistency, this will come easily. Using his name clearly and making eye contact will help. This lets the dog know that you are addressing them. Just be consistent and they will respond in a short time.

“Sit. All of your training stems from this. A lot of people think they can get the dog to sit by using the command over and over. This is really not a good approach. Your dog will not know what you are saying because they can’t speak English. A much better approach is to actually use your hands and guide the dog into the sitting position while saying the command ‘sit’. This will correlate the word with the action. Make sure you reward the dog with a treat once they are in the sitting position. This gives them positive reinforcement for their actions. Again, like everything else in puppy obedience training, it just takes time and consistency.

“Come” is the next command that you want to teach. There are times that your dog will be off the leash and it is important to still be able to control them. Starting with your dog on a leash is an easy way to do that. While holding the leash, tell your dog “sit” and walk as far away as you can. Once away, say the command “come” while pulling the dog to you with the leash. After doing this several times, you should be able to walk away from the dog, use the command, and they will come.

You will need these basic commands to get you started on training a new puppy. Your dog will become a lifelong friend after a while.
