Super Bowl Odds – Defense Does Not Usually Win

For the 1st time since Super Bowl XVII in Super Bowl prospects, the leading 2 defenses in football will be meeting.

The Pittsburgh steelers were first in football in fewest points permitted while the Packers were second. The Packers are 2-point favorites in Super Bowl wagering at SBG with the total listed at 44.5.

Super Bowl XVII between Washington and Miami matched up the leading 2 defenses in pro football and the total on the competition in Super Bowl odds was posted at 36.5. It flew over that number as Washington won 27-17.  It’s uncommon in sports when the leading 2 defenses in fact meet.  The last time it happened in baseball was in the 1995 World Series when the Atlanta Braves defeat the Cleveland Indians. The Braves had an amazing pitching staff that season that included Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. In hockey you must go back to 1999 when the Sabres and Dallas Stars met for the Stanley Cup. The Sabres led the league in goals vs whereas the Stars were second and it was Dallas who won the Cup. You do not have to go rather as far back in pro basketball as it occurred in the 2005 NBA Finals when Detroit met San Antonio.  The Detroit Pistons had the leading ranked defense whereas the Spurs were number 2. That series went 7 games with the Spurs in the long run successful.

6th Seed

Green Bay is just the second #6 seed ever to make it to the Super Bowl and the 1st from the National Football Conference.   The simply other #6 seed ironically enough was the Pittsburgh steelers who in 2005 won their three road games and in the end the Super Bowl.  Clubs that only sneak into the playoffs generally do not do well.  Pro basketball has merely had one #8 seed ever make pro basketball Finals and the New York Knicks were dispatched in 1999 by the San Antonio Spurs. The Edmonton Oilers made the Stanley Cup Final as a #8 seed in 2006 but lost in the Finals to Carolina.

Last Meeting

You might have forgotten the last time that the Steelers and Packers performed but it was a memorable game. They performed in December of 2009 in an excellent game that featured 886 passing yards.  Pittsburgh qb Ben Roethlisberger threw for 503 yards while Aaron Rodgers threw for 383. It was the greatest combined passing yards ever in Nfl history in a game that had no interceptions. The teams combined for 35 points in the 4th quarter alone and Pittsburgh won 37-36 on a last second TD from Roethlisberger to Mike Wallace.
